A LETTER FROM THE CEO

A LETTER FROM THE CEO

As I write this update, my heart is full of gratitude to you. Together, we have made 2017 the best year yet. MAPS: the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary is closer than ever. Let’s celebrate the holidays with a fabulous roundup of our successes for the planet this year.

WE ARE 3 YEARS OLD

December 14, 2017 marked our third birthday! Three years ago, a small core group of us incorporated the not-for-profit Parvati Foundation to stop the planned seismic testing off Clyde River in Canada’s Arctic. With love for our planet, we volunteered countless hours and our personal savings. We realized our world needs bold and decisive action to protect all life. So we created the MAPS proposal, which became a global treaty making a vital addendum to the outdated United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea. Then we spread the word. You helped us with donations, petition signatures and supported us every step of the way. We could not do this without you!

THE SUPREME COURT OF CANADA STOPS SEISMIC TESTING

Happily, whales and narwhals in Canada’s Arctic are safe this holiday from the devastating blast of seismic testing. Did you know that the sound of a seismic airgun is 100,000 times louder than the sound of a jet engine? Oil and gas companies use airguns to blast the ocean floor every 10 seconds, 24 hours a day. We rallied together as one family, knowing that we could not let this happen. Together, our urgent calls for a safe planet were heard. The plans for seismic testing off Clyde River were paused for two years – and now they have been quashed for good by the Supreme Court of Canada!

A NEW MARINE PARK IS BORN

When we discovered expired Shell oil lease permits in Canada’s Arctic, we allied with Greenpeace and WWF and brought this shocking revelation to light. In so doing, we sparked a national outcry for change. Shell has finally relinquished all claim to the sensitive Lancaster Sound area and the Tallurutiup Imanga/Lancaster Sound marine park is now going ahead, paving the way for the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary.

PARVATI FOUNDATION GOES GLOBAL

What started off as a few friends volunteering time to support a healthy world, has gone global. The amazingly selfless and broadhearted MAPS team of volunteers includes people from Serbia, Ghana, Uganda, India, Pakistan, England, Canada, USA, Mexico and France, proving that MAPS matters to all life on Earth.

In 2017, we were overjoyed to welcome Sally Ranney to Parvati Foundation’s Board of Advisors. Sally deeply understands the urgent necessity of MAPS. She is the co-founder of the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network, and the president of the American Renewable Energy Institute.

THE SIGNMAPS COALITION ACTIVATES

Luminaries in science and ecology like Dr. Jane Goodall, Dr. Sylvia Earle, Louie Psihoyos, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, Julia Butterfly Hill and more agree: we need MAPS now. Organizations from all over the world were moved in 2017 to step up to endorse MAPS and help get the urgent word out.

COMMERCIAL FISHING IS BANNED

Ten countries have come together to keep fishing out of the Arctic high seas for the next 16 years. It’s a great beginning! We have been calling on these nations to end commercial fishing in the Arctic permanently with MAPS. We can now build on this success.

PARVATI FOUNDATION RECEIVES UNITED NATIONS DESIGNATION

In 2017 we have been accredited by the United Nations and given presentations on the importance of MAPS at several key United Nations events. We are meeting with presidents and prime ministers and doing everything we can on the front lines to see that MAPS becomes realized now. Your donations make it possible for our all-volunteer team to help UN member nations understand the urgency for MAPS.
