Hero For The Planet Dr. Sylvia Earle Endorses Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary

“Her Deepness”, the renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, Time Magazine Hero for the Planet and founder of Mission Blue, has added her support to the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary (MAPS).

“We need to convey a sense of urgency because the world is changing. The next ten years is likely to be the most important time in the next 10,000 years. We have options that we are going to lose within ten years unless we take action now,” says Dr. Earle. “Every day options close, and this is particularly true in the Arctic. The Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary is an idea whose time has come, and I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the people behind these efforts.”

Dr. Earle is the second Ocean Elder to endorse the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary (the first being Dr. Jane Goodall).

MAPS is the only global initiative that addresses the urgent need to protect the earth’s very own cooling system – the Arctic ice cap – in order to stabilize the planet’s climate and sea levels. Arctic sea ice has protected humanity for thousands of years by keeping the earth cool and must remain undisturbed as we transition to sustainable solutions for energy. Parvati.org created the international MAPS Treaty to prevent this key climate-regulating region from becoming exploited and exacerbating extreme weather, food shortages, flooding and other issues around the world. The MAPS Treaty has been translated into all official UN languages, provided to all 193 UN member states, and shared with officials at COP21 and COP22.

“We are deeply grateful for Dr. Earle’s support for the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary and for her passionate, lifelong commitment to protecting our marine ecosystems,” says Parvati.org founder Parvati Devi. “The oceans play a pivotal role in our lives. Their health and well-being are linked inextricably to our own. When life in the Arctic Ocean is under threat, all of life on the planet is at risk. MAPS must be declared immediately to protect not only the Arctic Ocean, but the world. I encourage world leaders to carefully consider the wisdom of our ocean experts, and sign the MAPS Treaty now.”

Citizens of all nations are urged to sign and share the MAPS petition at https://parvati.org, and to call on their world leaders to sign the MAPS Treaty immediately.
