10 Million Wind-Powered Pumps To Refreeze Arctic Sea Ice? Just Declare MAPS Instead.

10 Million Wind-Powered Pumps To Refreeze Arctic Sea Ice? Just Declare MAPS Instead.

Canadian not-for-profit Parvati Foundation says there is no need for exorbitantly costly £400bn plans to refreeze Arctic ice (The Guardian, February 12, 2017) when there is already such a simple, immediate and cost-effective solution – the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary. MAPS protects the Arctic Ocean from all exploitation, allowing its ice to regenerate and continue to keep the earth cool.

Scientists are rightly concerned about the rapidly melting Arctic Ocean. The loss of the Arctic’s sea ice destroys a pristine and incredibly diverse habitat, endangering many species from Arctic coral reefs and Greenland sharks to cod and polar bears. It also triggers further global warming by removing ice that reflects solar radiation back into space, melts permafrost, releasing more carbon gases into the atmosphere, and disrupts weather patterns around the globe.

But controversial and complex geoengineering techniques, such as blocking sunlight from arriving on the planet to hold down temperatures, or attempting to refreeze Arctic ice through the use of 10 million wind-powered pumps, are an expensive gamble at best. The fact that such schemes are even being considered publicly, reveals just how desperately concerned scientists are about the loss of Arctic sea ice.

The obvious solution is to declare the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary. MAPS establishes the Arctic Ocean north of the Arctic Circle as a permanent international marine protected area free from commercial fishing, natural resource exploitation, seismic testing, military activity and through shipping traffic. Canadian not-for-profit Parvati Foundation created the international MAPS Treaty, translated it into the six official UN languages, and distributed it to the heads of government of all 193 member nations of the UN for their formal endorsement. The treaty takes effect with the signatures of 99 countries.

“MAPS stabilizes the planet’s climate and sea levels by protecting the Arctic ice cap, which is the earth’s cooling system,” says Parvati Foundation founder, musician, activist and author Parvati Devi. “To protect the vulnerable Arctic environment, we must take action that is in harmony with nature. We must respect the ecosystems that give us life, and make wise amends for the consequences of our pollution and greed. The simplest and most effective way is the declaration of MAPS, which protects the Arctic Ocean so that the ice may regenerate.”

Parvati Foundation calls on everyone to sign the MAPS petition and call on their heads of government to ratify the MAPS Treaty. There is no more time to delay. The time for MAPS is now.
